Dan grew up listening to a wide variety of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. His parents would always have music playing when they were doing chores, relaxing at the house, camping or on the beach. As he grew older, his interests expanded into all genres of music but mostly it was in classic rock and southern rock. He really loved hearing The Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, but also really enjoyed the different styles of The Moody Blues and Steely Dan.
He learned to play the guitar at the age of 15 when he was mostly into grunge and punk, especially Green Day because they had such great songs about being a teenager and the feelings they go through that he could relate to. Some of which feelings merely simmer down but never truly go away.
When he started writing songs in his 20s, he was influenced by a small number of modern artists because not many existed that still kept to that classic folk style. He gravitated towards Kid Rock because of the way he transitioned back to a classic folk sound and always wrote his own songs. James Blunt and Jack Johnson were other artists that he found himself listening to and likening his style to as well.
He basically compiled all of these different styles to come up with his original songs. This is why there is such a drastic change in style from one song to the next in his arsenal of music. He may write a song about drinking and having a good time, or maybe an introspective one about how overdoing these good times can have consequences. He loves all music, always will and looks forward to finding other influences along the way.
